General Information:

In Haveri District Dairy development and poultry are Major activities . As per 2003 live stock census Bovine Population is 4,29,390 and 5,15,212 poultry. Milk production is 84000 Tone /year and Egg production is 454 Lakhs /year, Haveri stands with respect to Egg production 7 Th. position in the state .

Sheep and Goat rearing is one of the Impartment allied activity providing supplementary income to the economically weaker section .This activity is popular in view of Early returns and shorter gestation period . Sheep rearing activity is popular in Ranebennur , Haveri and Savanur Tq in other Tq the activity is under taken on a low profile. As per 2003 census.

As per 2003 census the Disctrict had 1, 98,873 Sheep and 1,28,841 Goats There is a Sheep breading form at Guttal, which supplay quality rams to the needy farmers The sheep and wool development corporation in Ranebennur extends necessary support and guidance to sheep rearing and wool weaving There is a khilari cattle breeding form at Bankapur , which rears khilari cattle breeds and supplies male bulls for semen production and to the needy farmers

There are 138 Veterinary Institution s in the District looking after the health, breeding and scientific husbandry aspects of livestock and also implementation of various socio-economic programme under different Govt sponsored schemes

Objective of the department:

1. Providing heath care for domestic animals and poultry population of the District and to protect them from contagious and non-contagious diseases .

2. Improvement of the productivity of livestock and poultry through scientific , feeding and management .

3. Providing assistance to livestock and poultry co-operative societics for the benefit of both producers and consumers.

4. Implementing socio-economic programs such as special component plan and tribal sub-plan schemes of the Government and Assistance to farmers for growing of Fodder.

5. Conducting the livestock census once in five years, besides conducting the integrated sample survey every year for estimating the production of major livestock products viz, milk , meat ,wool and egg and their by-products .

There are 188 milk producers co-operative societies, 2 Sheep breeders co-operative society, 1.poultry farmers co-operative societies , 4 BAI.F centers , 1 Khillari cattle breeding form at Bankapur in the District .
